An Intervention
What happened here?
Why does everyone look so glum?
Let's have a beer
And drink to health if we lost someone
She said, "I'm sorry, but I hate to be
The bearer of bad news
Truth is, you're hurting us
And now it's time for you to choose"
What can I say?
I never knew you all felt this way
But on my grave
I swear to all of you that I can change
So have no fear
I'm a brand new man tonight
Just give me one more beer
Then I'll turn over any leaf you'd like
She said, "I'm sorry, but I knew you'd say that
And I wish it was not so
Although it tears me up
I think it's time for me to go"
What can I say?
I never knew that you felt this way
But on my grave
I swear to you right now that I can change
I can change...
About the song
I originally recorded a version of this back in 2003 for my first Kid Overdrive demo, before the moniker became purely a NES-core thing. I heard the melody in my head while taking a shower one day, and started writing the lyrics right then and there. Most of the time I'm appalled at the stuff I used to write in high school and college, but every now and then I'll find a gem that I want to re-record. It fits neatly into this part of the album in that it gets the tempo ball rolling a bit from "Definition", and still deals with a serious topic.
